The objective of user-centered design is to demonstrate in what ways an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool will be beneficial to humans. With user-centered design, we use both the model’s performance and positive human outcomes to evaluate the effectiveness of our AI tools.
Put more concretely, if we are developing a tool to help a diagnosis, we need to demonstrate that humans will make accurate diagnoses while using the tool. Although the machine learning model performs well, the model will not be used in isolation. Instead, humans’ personal and social factors play a large role in determining the effectiveness of the tool.
